Do I have to pay the excess if I damage a rental motorcycle?
Do I have to pay the excess if I damage a rental motorcycle?
In most motorcycle rentals, the renter is responsible for an excess if the rental motorcycle is damaged. At MotoGS Rental Croatia, the maximum excess for covered damage is EUR 2,000, but this amount can be insured separately through a special deposit insurance before the rental begins.
The excess is the maximum amount you may have to pay for damage to the rented motorcycle under the rental agreement. It is different from the deposit: the deposit is a security amount reserved on your credit card, while the excess defines your financial responsibility in case of covered damage.
At MotoGS Rental Croatia, all BMW GS rental motorcycles include standard insurance coverage. If the motorcycle is damaged during your rental, the maximum excess is EUR 2,000. This amount may be used to cover damage, depending on the inspection result, repair costs, insurance handling, and the terms of the motorcycle rental agreement.
You may also arrange a separate deposit insurance through our insurance partner, HanseMerkur insurance. This is a specific insurance product designed to protect the rental deposit or excess amount in the event of insured damage. Depending on the selected policy and its terms, it can reimburse or cover the EUR 2,000 excess. This insurance is not automatically included in the rental price and must be arranged separately before the rental starts.
Even if you arrange deposit insurance, the credit card deposit is still required at pickup. The deposit is reserved because it secures the motorcycle, the included equipment, possible damage, late return, traffic fines, missing items, and other obligations under the rental contract.
Important: deposit insurance does not cover every situation automatically. Off-road riding, racetrack use, riding under the influence of alcohol or drugs, gross negligence, unauthorized border crossings, or other serious breaches of the rental terms may lead to additional liability and may not be covered by insurance.
Before your trip, decide whether you want to keep the standard EUR 2,000 excess risk yourself or arrange optional deposit insurance. Please also check our FAQs about:
