Can I ride a rental motorcycle across borders in Europe?

Yes, cross-border riding with a rental motorcycle is possible in Europe, but it is never automatic. It depends on the rental company’s approval, the motorcycle insurance coverage, the countries on your route, and the required border and vehicle documents.

At MotoGS Rental Croatia, you can ride our BMW GS rental motorcycles in all EU countries. You may also ride in Switzerland and in all Balkan countries except Kosovo, provided the route is approved and the required documents are carried with you.

Kosovo is not covered by our motorcycle insurance and is therefore not allowed. The Asian part of Turkey is also not allowed. If your route includes international travel, please make sure every country on your route is permitted under the rental and insurance conditions before you start riding.

For approved cross-border motorcycle tours, you must carry the required documents. These normally include your passport or national ID card, valid motorcycle licence, rental agreement, vehicle registration documents, border crossing permit, and International Insurance Card / Green Card. If your motorcycle licence was issued outside the EU or EEA, an International Driving Permit may also be required or strongly recommended.

MotoGS Rental Croatia prepares the required border and insurance documents for approved international routes and hands them over at pickup. You are still responsible for checking your personal travel documents, visa or entry requirements, licence validity, and the rules of every country you plan to ride through.

Border rules, police checks, insurance requirements, toll systems, safety equipment rules, and traffic regulations can differ from country to country. This is especially important on motorcycle tours through Croatia, the Adriatic region, the Balkans, Southern Europe, the Alps region, Italy, Austria, Slovenia, Hungary, Romania, France, Switzerland, or other permitted countries.

Unauthorized border crossings can affect the motorcycle insurance coverage, increase your liability, create problems with police or border authorities, and lead to consequences under the motorcycle rental agreement and the rental terms and conditions.

If your planned route includes ferries, non-EU borders, Balkan countries, Switzerland, or longer international sections, tell us before pickup. This allows us to check whether the route is permitted and prepare the correct documents for your ride.
