What alcohol limits apply when riding a motorcycle in Europe?
Alcohol limits for motorcycle riders vary across Europe. If you rent a motorcycle for a cross-border tour, you must follow the alcohol and drug regulations of every country on your route, not only the rules of the country where the rental starts.
Many European countries apply different blood alcohol limits depending on rider age, licence status, vehicle category, local traffic law, and the specific situation. Some countries apply lower or zero alcohol limits for young riders, new licence holders, professional drivers, or after certain traffic incidents.
In Croatia, the general blood alcohol limit is commonly stated as 0.5‰ for riders aged 25 and older. Riders under 25 are generally subject to a 0.0‰ alcohol limit. However, rules and enforcement can change, and your route may include countries with stricter limits. Before your motorcycle tour, check the current traffic regulations in Europe for every country you plan to ride through.
At MotoGS Rental Croatia, riding a rental motorcycle under the influence of alcohol, drugs, medication that impairs riding ability, or any other intoxicating substance is strictly prohibited. This rule applies regardless of whether a local legal limit appears to allow a small amount of alcohol. As a responsible motorcycle rental provider, we owe this clear standard not only to our customers, but also to passengers, other road users, emergency services, and anyone who could be affected by impaired riding.
Alcohol or drug involvement can affect the motorcycle insurance coverage, increase your personal liability, lead to police penalties, and create serious consequences under the motorcycle rental agreement and the rental terms and conditions.
If an accident, damage, theft, or roadside incident occurs, police may carry out alcohol or drug testing. Refusing an alcohol or drug test can also lead to serious penalties and may negatively affect insurance and liability handling.
If alcohol, drugs, medication impairment, or any other intoxicating substance is involved in an incident, the motorcycle rental excess, the rental deposit and credit card, police documentation, insurance records, and the full damage or accident procedure may become relevant.
The rule is clear:
it is prohibited to ride or drive any vehicle under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or any substance that impairs your ability to ride. This applies to every vehicle, and of course also to a rental motorcycle from MotoGS Rental Croatia. Alcohol should only be consumed after the riding day is finished, the motorcycle is safely parked for the night, and you will not ride again. Before the next ride, you must be fully sober and fit to ride.
