Where can I park a rental motorcycle safely?

When you rent a motorcycle, safe parking depends on the country, city, accommodation, road situation, and local parking rules. The best approach is to use official motorcycle parking where available, choose visible and well-lit places, follow local signs, and secure the motorcycle properly whenever you leave it unattended.

Parking rules can vary widely across Europe. A place that is accepted for motorcycles in one town may be restricted in another. This is especially important on motorcycle tours through Croatia, the Adriatic region, the Balkans, Italy, the Alps, Southern Europe, islands, ferry ports, old towns, national parks, and busy tourist areas.

Whenever possible, park in marked motorcycle spaces, hotel parking areas, secure garages, supervised parking lots, or places recommended by your accommodation. At hotels, guesthouses, and apartments, ask in advance whether safe motorcycle parking is available, especially if you are travelling with several riders or staying in a city centre, harbour area, island town, or mountain village.

Do not block pavements, pedestrian zones, private entrances, emergency access, hotel driveways, ferry lanes, loading areas, or spaces reserved for residents, taxis, buses, or disabled parking. Even if local riders appear to park informally, this does not always mean it is legal, tolerated, or safe for a rental motorcycle.

Parking fees, parking permits, toll parking zones, local restrictions, fines, towing costs, and administrative fees are the renter’s responsibility. If a parking fine, unpaid parking fee, towing charge, or traffic-related administrative cost is issued during the rental period, it may be handled according to the motorcycle rental agreement and the rental terms and conditions.

For theft prevention, always lock the motorcycle and use the additional security lock with alarm function provided with the rental motorcycle. Do not leave helmets, jackets, gloves, documents, electronics, wallets, passports, cameras, navigation devices, or other valuables unsecured on the motorcycle or inside easily accessible luggage.

At MotoGS Rental Croatia, every BMW GS rental motorcycle includes practical touring equipment such as lockable side cases, a top case, and an additional alarm lock. This helps make parking safer during multi-day rides, but it does not replace careful parking decisions and basic theft prevention.

The motorcycle has theft-related insurance coverage, but insurance handling always depends on the situation, documentation, police report where required, the motorcycle insurance coverage, the rental deposit and credit card, the motorcycle rental excess, and the rental and insurance conditions. Negligent behaviour, leaving the motorcycle unsecured, ignoring local rules, or parking in prohibited or unsafe places may affect liability and insurance handling.

If the motorcycle is stolen, damaged while parked, towed, or involved in a parking-related incident, contact MotoGS Rental Croatia immediately. In case of theft, third-party damage, unclear liability, or official involvement, contact the police and make sure the incident is properly documented. Please also follow the damage or accident procedure.

Before planning your route, check the traffic regulations in Europe for the countries you want to ride through, especially if your tour includes border crossings, ferry ports, islands, city centres, mountain passes, or toll parking zones. For route planning, please also see our motorcycle route recommendations and the included motorcycle equipment.
