International Driving Permit
Is my non-EU driver’s license valid for renting a motorcycle in Croatia?
Normally, when renting a motorbike within Europe, and specifically in Croatia, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is not required.
HOWEVER, bear in mind that without an actual Category A driving licence, you cannot rent or ride a motorbike with an engine capacity of more than 50 cc, even in Croatia.
An EU category A driving licence, in other words a motorcycle licence issued in an EU member state, is valid in all EU countries.
Non-EU citizens visiting Croatia can use a driving licence for motorcycles issued outside the EU, but it must be ensured that any police officer during a traffic check, in the event of an accident, or a border police officer when crossing the border, can identify the driving licence presented to them as a motorcycle driving licence.
As this can often be very problematic depending on the country of issue and the language of origin, it is ALWAYS advisable to carry an international driving licence in addition to your existing national driving licence.
The international driving licence can usually be applied for at the same authority where you applied for your national driving licence and can sometimes be applied for for a period of up to 3 years.
The IDP is basically nothing more than a translation of your national driving licence into the most common and important languages.
Crossing borders. What countries can I ride the motorcycle in?
Main question: Is it permitted to cross national borders with a motorcycle rented from us?
YES, it is permitted.
Our motorcycles are fully insured in all countries within the EU. Other countries that are not members of the EU, but the motorcycle is insured in, are: Switzerland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Serbia, Albania, and Montenegro, as well as the European part of Turkey.
There is NO insurance coverage in Kosovo.
So, in principle, you can cross the borders to the countries already mentioned, EXCEPT Kosovo.
However, there are two important points to note when crossing the border with the border police:
1. Present an insurance confirmation using the International Insurance Card (IVK) (formerly the Green Card) and
2. Written border crossing permit.
We will give you the IVK and the border crossing permit when you pick up your motorcycle, along with your vehicle registration and the rental agreement.
However, we ask that you inform us in advance of your intended border crossing in the message field when booking, and at the latest when picking up your motorcycle.
You will not incur any costs for the border crossing permit.
We consider the free issuance of the border crossing permit as a service, as we are aware that there is always a strong desire to ride to other countries.
Of course, a passport is required or depending on the country of origin and the destination, a national ID card alone may be sufficient. Furthermore, a Class A driver's license is required, and depending on the country of issue, an International Driver's License may also be required.
We are noticing that the presentation of an IDP is increasingly being requested at borders.
How and where is the best place to store my luggage?
You can safely and dryly store any luggage you don't want to take with you on your motorcycle trip with us.
Arrival is via Split's Resnik International Airport (SPU), which is served by many European and international airports. Some guests from overseas also use Zagreb (ZAG) as a stopover.
We are happy to pick you up directly from Split Airport for a small fee and return you later. Alternatively, you can easily reach us by taxi or UBER – the journey takes a maximum of 10 minutes.
Once you arrive, you can simply repack your luggage and leave everything that doesn't belong on your motorcycle tour with us. All of our motorcycle cases are equipped with practical inner pockets that make loading and unloading even easier.
Riding on-road or off-road - what is permitted and what is not?
We fundamentally attach great importance to the quality and extensive maintenance of our motorcycles, and of course, to their high-quality equipment.
Therefore, riding our motorcycles off-road is NOT permitted. Even if they are BMW GS models, which are actually designed for off-road adventures.
We always want to provide our customers and companions with a smooth motorcycle adventure, and this naturally requires a perfect motorcycle.
And to always guarantee this, we pay close attention to the condition of the motorcycles before collection. There is no need to discuss how severe the stress of a prolonged off-road ride can be for a motorcycle, even if the motorcycle was designed for it.
In short, our motorcycles should and may only be ridden on paved roads.
We even reserve the right to increase the liability amount in the event of damage to EUR 3,000 in the event of violations.
We owe it to our customers to always provide the best possible motorcycle and therefore expect each of our customers and renters to respect this requirement.
We thank you in advance for your understanding.
What kind of insurance coverage is included in the motorcycle rental?
In principle, every motorcycle, regardless of model, is fully insured with MotoGS Rental Croatia.
This insurance coverage is therefore a standard part of our motorcycle rentals and is already included in the stated rental price.
This high-quality insurance coverage includes:
- Insurance coverage for damage to third parties (damaged property or injured persons)!
- Insurance coverage for damage to the rented motorcycle (own damage)!
- Insurance coverage in the event of theft!
With regard to insurance coverage against third parties, the insurance coverage is a flat rate of EUR 100 million, and in the case of injured persons, EUR 15 million per person.
With regard to environmental damage caused by the rider of the rented motorcycle, the insurance coverage is up to EUR 5 million.
Furthermore, comprehensive emergency services are included in the event of a breakdown.
However, as usual, the rider himself is NOT covered by this insurance coverage. It is therefore ALWAYS advisable to have your own private accident insurance.
However, any passenger is insured up to the aforementioned EUR 15 million.
The excess, or any personal contribution, in the event of damage by the lessee, regardless of the type of damage, is, as is generally customary, a maximum of EUR 2,000. This excess will be reserved as security on your credit card when you pick up the motorcycle and will be released immediately after the motorcycle is returned in the condition agreed upon.
As one of the few motorcycle rental companies in Europe, and probably the only one in Croatia, we offer our customers the option of insuring the EUR 2,000 excess with additional insurance.
In other words, after purchasing this additional insurance, the lessee bears no costs in the event of any damage.
You can find more information about this additional insurance here.
What kind of documents do I need to rent a motorcycle in Croatia?
Croatia and a driver's license?
Of course, in Croatia, as in all other countries, you need a category "A" motorcycle license.
You also need a valid identification document, such as a passport for non-EU citizens or an identity card for EU citizens.
If your motorcycle license was issued outside the EU and therefore indicates a category other than "A," you should assume that the police, in the event of a check, or the border police when crossing borders into neighboring countries, may not know the category indicated on your license, may not understand it, or may not be willing to understand it.
For your own safety and peace of mind, we therefore advise you to apply for an International Driving Permit (IDP) and always carry it with you along with your national driving license.
You can easily apply for an IDP at your driver's license office in your home country or here.
To rent a motorcycle from MotoGS Rental Croatia, you must be at least 23 years old and have at least three years of motorcycle riding experience.
A security deposit of EUR 2,000 is required and will be held on your credit card. It will be released upon return of the motorcycle, including any additional rented equipment, in accordance with the rental agreement.
What kind of payment methods with MotoGS Rental Croatia are available?
At the end of the online booking process, you can pay by card (payment is processed via Stripe) or via PayPal, Amazon Pay, Google Pay or Apple Pay in our booking system.
All debit and credit cards from almost all providers are accepted.
In exceptional cases, you can also pay in cash if you wish to rent the motorbike directly from us in our shop.
When booking or reserving your desired rental motorbike, a reservation fee of 30% of the rental price is payable, the remaining 70% is payable upon collection at the latest. However, if you wish, you can also pay the full amount at the time of booking. The decision is entirely up to you.
What do I need to pay before renting a motorcycle?
To confirm your booking, we require a 30% deposit, and the remaining 70% no later than the day you pick up the motorcycle. Alternatively, you can pay 100% of the rental amount on the day of booking.
Can the excess be waived?
A security deposit is always required. We also need some security in case the worst case scenario should occur.
Please always remember that we are providing you with a motorcycle, which, depending on the model, has a total value of between EUR 18,000 and EUR 33,000, and we trust that you will treat the motorcycle as if it were your own.
BUT, we offer you the option of securing this security deposit with additional insurance.
In short: In the event of a claim, this additional insurance would fully reimburse you for any damage you may have incurred.
You can find further information here.
What kind of equipment is included in my rental price?
We rent ONLY high-quality and fully equipped BMW motorcycles. No surcharge for any accessories or features, and most importantly, no hidden costs!
And all at a very good and fair price.
BMW motorcycles come with all available features; see the description of the respective motorcycle type for details.
Furthermore, the motorcycles are rented with:
- the BMW Connected RideCradle
- a main case and two side cases
- a small case on the tank and, if necessary,
- additional panniers on the tank guards and side cases.
Note on the ConnectedRide Cradle:
The BMW Motorrad ConnectedRide Cradle is a very good feature because it secures your smartphone in the cockpit and is much more than just a simple mount or charging station.
With the BMW Motorrad Connected app, you can use your smartphone as a navigation device and also provide valuable information such as acceleration, lean angle, and much more. The individually adjustable arms allow the mount to adapt to different smartphone sizes and offer the option of charging the device inductively with a maximum of 7.5 W or via a USB-C cable. The control element allows for convenient smartphone control via the switches and rocker switches on the left handlebar (also known as the BMW Multi-controller or Wonder Wheel), provided a Bluetooth connection is established.
For further information, especially about the BMW app, please follow this link.
Of course, insurance and taxes are already included in the rental prices.
What is the minimum rental period?
Yes, there is a minimum rental period, which is generally two days.
We had to choose a minimum rental period of two days because the process for a one-day rental is simply too extensive.
In exceptional cases and after prior agreement, however, we will still try to arrange one-day rentals for a motorcycle.
But only after prior agreement.
Important note:
Our online booking system always calculates in 24-hour intervals. This means that if you want to reserve the desired motorcycle for pickup at 8:00 a.m., for example, you should return it by 8:00 a.m. on the last day of the rental.
However, if you want to return the motorcycle around 9:00 a.m., the system will automatically calculate an additional day of rental time.
In such cases, we ask you to book the motorcycle with a return time of 8:00 a.m. and then return it at 9:00 a.m. Overstaying the rental time by one hour is free of charge.
How do I get from my hotel or Split Airport to the rental store and back?
Our location is right next to Split Airport. You can reach us quickly and easily, for example, by taking an Uber, provided you use this app. Another option is certainly a taxi. The journey from the airport to us takes a maximum of 10 minutes.
If needed, MotoGS Rental also offers pickup and drop-off of our motorcycles at and from the airport, for example, if you want to embark on your motorcycle adventure directly from the airport.
A personal pickup and drop-off service from and to Split Airport is also available.
However, we still consider picking up the motorcycle and returning it to our location the best option, because if adjustments need to be made, for example, regarding the rider height (different seat heights are available), this would be easiest to do at our location.
You also have the option of renting additional equipment, such as helmets or jackets, from us and, if necessary, trying on the correct size beforehand.
As an additional service, we also offer free storage of your luggage with us during your tour, if necessary.

What in case of motorcycle damage?
Any damage to the motorcycle itself, to third parties (including persons), or theft of the motorcycle is covered by a deposit (security deposit) of EUR 2,000. This excess must be paid upon pickup of the motorcycle or will be reserved on your credit card and released after the motorcycle has been returned in accordance with the agreement.
Damage exceeding EUR 2,000 will be covered by the motorcycle insurance.
Further information, particularly regarding the option to cover the risk of loss of the EUR 2,000 security deposit, can be found here.
In any case, however, a "European Accident Report" form (available in English and German) must be completed together with the police for submission to the insurance company.
Furthermore, all details of any other party involved in the accident must be recorded and the other party's insurance company must be identified.
Important note: NEVER admit liability, nor should you sign a contract with third parties.
It's always best to keep a clear and cool head and inform us immediately about the situation. Our phone number will be provided along with all the other necessary documents. We're here to help you.
Is it mandatory to wear a safety vest while riding in Croatia?
No, but it is highly recommended to be as visible as you can. But we always provide you with 2 safety vests, just in case. A helmet is required by law with a 150 Euro fine in case of not wearing your helmet while riding.
Also, motorcycle riders are required to ride with daylights on, during the summer and winter seasons.
What are the speed limit regulations for riding motorcycles or driving a car in Croatia?
Four general speed limits apply on Croatian roads:
- 50 km/h (31 mph) within inhabited areas, or
- up to 80 km/h (50 mph) where explicitly permitted,
- 90 km/h (56 mph) outside inhabited places,
- 110 km/h (68 mph) on expressways and
- 130 km/h (81 mph) on highways.
Do you have to pay tolls on motorways?
Yes. As in almost all European countries, tolls are also due in Croatia. Only a few countries are exceptions in Europe.
The motorway toll is calculated based on the distance ridden. It is due at toll stations; a vignette is not required.
Motorcycles (including those with sidecars), trikes and quads belong to vehicle category 1A.
Sometimes you get a ticket at the beginning of the toll route, which is only paid for when you leave the section. The amounts can be paid in cash and by credit or debit card.
Bridges:
The Krk Bridge (Croatian Krčki most), which connects the island of Krk to the mainland, is toll-free, as is the Mirna Bridge between the Nova Vas and Višnjan junctions of the A9 in Istria. So far, no fees have been charged for the Pelješac Bridge, which opened in 2022 and leads from the Pelješac peninsula to the mainland.
Tunnel:
Special charges apply for the approximately 5 km long Ucka Tunnel, which is located on the A8 motorway (Rovinj - Rijeka). The Sveti Ilija Tunnel on the D532 is no longer a toll road.
You can find more information in our blog.
What about alcohol limit regulations in Croatia, regarding riding a motorbike or driving a car?
The limit for riders with or over 25 years of age is 0.5‰. It is illegal to ride with more than 0.5‰ of alcohol in the blood system. For riders younger than 25 years it is absolutely forbidden to ride a motorcycle or drive a car on Croatian roads. The law is 0.0‰ alcohol for those under 25 years of age.
Severe fines apply should you reject alcohol and drug testing when stopped by the police. Yes, it is known, Croatia has the most amazing wines and tasty grappa, so please drink responsibly.

Can I take my rented motorcycle on a ferry?
Yes, of course you can take your motorcycle on a ferry. However, you should always let us know in advance during the booking process. If we are informed of your plans in advance, we can also give you helpful planning tips.
There are plenty of ferries in Croatia. There are domestic ferries from the mainland to the larger islands off the coast, as well as international ferries from Croatia, for example, to Italy or wherever you want to go.
There are also excellent ferry connections, for example, from Durrës in Albania to Bari in Italy, if you have or want to plan a longer motorcycle tour.
All ferry companies, whether domestic or international, offer an online booking system. To ensure you reach your destination by ferry, we recommend booking your ferry ticket a few days before departure. Depending on the ferry route and time of year (high or low season), it may even be advisable to book tickets several weeks in advance.
International ferry connections primarily operate overnight. This means that the ferry leaves the port at 10:00 PM, for example, and arrives at its destination the next morning at 7:00 AM. These ferries also offer overnight accommodations in single, double, or four-bed cabins. The cabins can be booked as inside or outside cabins, preferably with private shower facilities.
A very good way to filter out all or at least the most important ferry connections and book them online can be found at Direct Ferries, for example. There are, of course, plenty of other comparison portals for booking the right ferry ticket.
Important note:
PLEASE keep in mind that, depending on the departure and destination ports, you may also be leaving the EU and/or re-entering the EU. This also means crossing a border, and depending on your country of origin, you must have your passport with you. Without a passport, check-in would not be possible in this case. You will also need ALL other documents that you would need if you were crossing any other border on any mainland.
What is important to know if I am booking a stay in Croatia?
Plan your trip ahead. High season usually means that city locations like Split and Dubrovnik are overcrowded and overbooked. However, there are tons of great locations for explorers like Gorski Kotar or islands. Free camping is not legal in Croatia, so if you plan to sleep under the stars and safe environment, make sure that your little private camp is well hidden. A valid option worth mentioning is official campsites. Mostly located along the coastline, should you feel tired and in need of rest, there are plenty to choose from without booking ahead.
But have in mind, it is always good to be prepared at least with a tent.
What about parking fees and free parking in Croatia?
Free parking in Croatia is rare and unique.
But not for motorcycles, as many official parking facilities in Croatia offer free parking for motorcycles.
It's relatively easy to find and park free parking if you want to visit a special place for a day or longer. Always try to park where the locals park, because they know what they're doing!
Croatia is safe from motorcycle theft, so most locals don't even lock their motorcycles. They don't even lock their helmets, and they're often left unsecured on the motorcycle.
Yes, Croatia is a pleasant country.
Free parking spaces are usually in busy places, which further reduces the likelihood of theft or damage. In the worst case scenario, MotoGS Rental's motorcycles are insured against theft anyway. Your liability is limited to the amount of your deposit reserved on your credit card, and not a cent more.
