Bmw Connected Ridecradle
What equipment is included with a rental motorcycle?
A well-equipped rental motorcycle makes a long tour easier, safer, and more comfortable. At MotoGS Rental Croatia, every BMW GS rental motorcycle includes touring luggage, navigation support, safety equipment, standard insurance, and taxes in the rental price.
Each motorcycle comes with a complete luggage setup: two lockable side cases, a top case, and matching inner bags. A tank bag and additional crash-bar bags are also available if required. This gives you practical storage for multi-day touring while keeping your luggage organised and easy to handle during the trip.
For navigation and smartphone integration, each BMW GS includes the BMW Connected Ride Cradle. It holds your smartphone securely in the cockpit and works with the BMW Motorrad Connected app, which can be used for navigation, route guidance, ride data, lean angle, acceleration, and other motorcycle-related information.
Depending on your smartphone and setup, the BMW Connected Ride Cradle can support inductive charging up to 7.5 W or charging by USB cable. Compatible app functions can also be controlled via the BMW Multi-Controller on the handlebar, which makes it easier to operate navigation and ride information while touring.
Important travel and safety equipment is included as well. This includes high-visibility vests for rider and passenger, a first aid kit, a tire repair kit for emergencies on multi-day trips, an electric tire pump, and an additional security lock with alarm function.
The rental price also includes standard motorcycle insurance coverage and applicable taxes. Personal riding gear such as helmets, jackets, gloves, trousers, or boots is not part of the standard motorcycle equipment unless it has been booked or agreed separately.
Before your motorcycle tour, check whether you need any additional riding gear or special equipment for your route. For related information, please also see our FAQs about luggage storage during motorcycle rental, BMW Connected Ride Cradle, BMW Motorrad Connected app, BMW GS rental fleet, motorcycle rental prices, motorcycle insurance coverage, and our rental terms and conditions.
Emergency call systems are still not standard on most motorcycles, and they are also not something you can normally expect on every rental motorcycle. Many motorcycles from other manufacturers do not have a built-in SOS or eCall system at all.
At MotoGS Rental Croatia, this is different because our rental fleet consists of BMW GS motorcycles. We order and equip our BMW GS rental motorcycles with the BMW SOS emergency call system, also known as BMW Intelligent Emergency Call or eCall. This is one of the important safety advantages of our BMW GS rental fleet.
The BMW SOS emergency call system is built into the motorcycle and can help riders get faster support after a serious accident or in an emergency situation. It is especially useful on longer motorcycle tours, remote roads, mountain routes, and cross-border rides where quickly sharing the exact location can make a real difference.
The system can trigger an emergency call automatically in the event of a crash, depending on the accident situation and system detection. It can also be activated manually from the handlebar if immediate help is needed.
In an emergency, the system can transmit the motorcycle’s location and connect the rider by voice with the international BMW call center, helping to coordinate assistance more quickly.
This is a valuable safety feature when riding through Croatia, the Adriatic region, the Balkans, Southern Europe, or more remote touring areas where road names, exact locations, or mobile phone orientation may not always be clear.
The BMW SOS emergency call system does not replace safe riding, responsible route planning, a charged mobile phone, local emergency numbers, personal travel insurance, or the normal motorcycle insurance coverage. It is an additional safety feature designed to support the rider in a critical situation.
Availability and function may depend on the country, mobile network coverage, BMW system availability, and the specific emergency situation. The system should therefore be seen as an important additional safety layer, not as a guarantee that every emergency can be handled automatically.
For planning your ride, please also check the included motorcycle equipment, BMW Connected Ride Cradle, motorcycle route recommendations, and rental terms and conditions.
Yes, you can cancel a motorcycle rental booking, and in many cases you can also request changes before the rental starts. Changes may include the rental date, pickup time, return time, motorcycle model, rider details, passenger information, luggage setup, or additional equipment.
Whether a booking can be changed depends on availability, timing, the selected motorcycle, the rental period, and the type of change requested. If you need to change your booking, please contact us as early as possible so we can check what is realistically possible.
At MotoGS Rental Croatia, we always try to find a practical solution if your travel plans change. A different date, a different pickup or return time, another BMW GS model, or additional rental equipment may be possible, but changes are not guaranteed and may affect the rental price.
If you cancel your motorcycle rental, cancellation fees may apply depending on how close the cancellation is to the rental start date. Very late cancellations or no-shows may result in a high cancellation fee because the motorcycle was reserved for your selected rental period and may no longer be rented to another customer.
Rebooking to another date may be possible in some cases, especially if you contact us early and the motorcycle is still available for the new rental period. However, a rebooking is not an automatic right and must be confirmed by MotoGS Rental Croatia.
Please do not wait until the last moment if your plans change. Early communication gives us the best chance to adjust the booking, offer another available motorcycle, change equipment, or find a fair solution within the booking and cancellation rules.
For legally binding details, the booking confirmation, invoice, individual rental agreement, and our rental terms and conditions apply. For related information, please also see our FAQs about motorcycle rental payment methods, rental payment before pickup, deposit and credit card, and included motorcycle equipment.
If you arrive with a suitcase or larger travel luggage, you usually need a safe place to store it during your motorcycle rental. A motorcycle can carry touring luggage, but it is not designed to carry large travel suitcases from an airport or hotel.
Many motorcycle rental customers arrive by plane with a suitcase, duffel bag, or larger travel bag. Before starting the ride, it is common to repack only the essentials into the motorcycle’s panniers and leave the rest of the luggage safely stored until the motorcycle is returned.
At MotoGS Rental Croatia, you can safely and dryly store the suitcase or larger travel luggage you do not need during your motorcycle tour. This is especially useful if you arrive via Split Airport and start your rental directly after arrival.
Our BMW GS rental motorcycles include a practical touring luggage setup with two lockable side cases, a top case, matching inner bags, and—if required—a tank bag and additional crash-bar bags. This gives you organised storage for your riding gear, clothing, and daily travel items during the tour.
When you pick up the motorcycle, you can repack your belongings at our rental location and leave your suitcase or larger travel luggage with us. After returning the motorcycle, you can collect your stored luggage before continuing your journey.
If you are travelling with several suitcases, bulky items, or a larger group, please let us know before pickup so we can plan the storage space properly. For related information, please also see our FAQs about included motorcycle equipment, Split Airport motorcycle rental, motorcycle pickup and return, and our rental terms and conditions.
No. Rental motorcycles may only be ridden on paved public roads. At MotoGS Rental Croatia, off-road riding, gravel tracks, trails, beaches, racetracks, and other non-public or unpaved riding areas are not permitted.
This rule applies even if you rent a BMW GS motorcycle. BMW GS models are known for their adventure-touring capabilities, but our rental motorcycles are prepared and insured for road touring, not for off-road use.
The reason is simple: off-road riding creates a much higher risk of damage, tire problems, mechanical wear, recovery costs, and insurance complications. We keep our motorcycles in excellent technical condition so every customer receives a safe, clean, and properly maintained motorcycle.
If the motorcycle is used outside the permitted road conditions, this may be treated as a serious breach of the motorcycle rental agreement. It can affect insurance cover, increase the renter’s liability, and may lead to a higher excess in the event of damage.
For scenic riding, Croatia and the Balkan region offer many excellent paved mountain roads, coastal roads, national park routes, and remote touring roads that are perfect for BMW GS motorcycles without leaving permitted road surfaces.
Before planning your route, make sure it stays on paved public roads and complies with the rental terms. For related information, please also see our FAQs about motorcycle insurance coverage, motorcycle rental excess, damage or accident procedure, and our rental terms and conditions.
Motorcycle rental insurance usually protects against major financial risks such as third-party claims, damage to the rented motorcycle, theft, and certain insured incidents. At MotoGS Rental Croatia, standard motorcycle insurance is already included in the rental price for every BMW GS rental motorcycle.
At MotoGS Rental Croatia, the included insurance currently covers third-party liability, comprehensive insurance for damage to the rented motorcycle, partial comprehensive insurance for theft, environmental damage cover, and defense benefits. The current insurance information states liability cover of up to EUR 100 million as a flat amount and up to EUR 15 million per injured person.
Third-party liability insurance covers damage caused to other people, vehicles, or property, within the limits of the insurance policy. Comprehensive insurance covers insured damage to the rented motorcycle itself, while partial comprehensive insurance covers insured theft-related incidents.
Important: the rider is not personally insured for injuries through the motorcycle rental insurance. If you rent a motorcycle for a tour, you should arrange your own private accident insurance, travel insurance, or riding-specific personal protection. A passenger is insured up to EUR 15 million under the current insurance information.
The maximum excess for covered damage is EUR 2,000 per claim. This amount is reserved on your credit card as the security deposit at pickup and released after return according to the inspection result, the motorcycle rental agreement, and the applicable insurance handling.
MotoGS Rental Croatia also offers the option to arrange separate deposit insurance through HanseMerkur Insurance. This special insurance product can protect the EUR 2,000 deposit or excess amount in the event of insured damage, depending on the selected policy and its terms. It is not automatically included in the rental price and must be arranged separately before the rental starts.
Insurance cover always depends on proper use of the motorcycle and compliance with the rental and insurance conditions. Off-road riding, racetrack use, riding under the influence of alcohol or drugs, unauthorized border crossings, gross negligence, or other serious breaches of the rental terms may affect insurance cover and increase the renter’s liability.
Before your motorcycle tour starts, check what is included, what is not included, and whether you want to arrange optional deposit insurance. For related information, please also see our FAQs about motorcycle rental excess, deposit insurance, rental deposit and credit card, damage or accident procedure, border crossing with a rental motorcycle, and our rental terms and conditions.
To rent a motorcycle, you need to meet the basic rental requirements, present the required documents at pickup, and have a valid credit card for the security deposit. The exact documents may depend on your licence country, nationality, and planned motorcycle route.
At MotoGS Rental Croatia, the minimum requirements are clear: you must be at least 23 years old, have at least 3 years of motorcycle riding experience, and hold a valid Category A motorcycle licence or an equivalent full motorcycle licence for the motorcycle you want to rent.
You must also present a valid ID document. For EU citizens, this is usually a national ID card. For non-EU citizens, it is normally a passport. If your motorcycle licence was issued outside the EU or EEA, an International Driving Permit is strongly recommended and may be required for police checks, border crossings, insurance handling, or accident documentation.
A valid credit card is required for the EUR 2,000 security deposit. This amount is reserved on your credit card at pickup and released after return, provided there are no open claims, damage, missing equipment, unpaid fees, traffic fines, tolls, or other obligations under the rental agreement. Please check the details about rental deposit and credit card before your rental starts.
If your route includes approved border crossings, you must carry the required international travel and vehicle documents. Depending on your route, this may include your passport or national ID card, motorcycle licence, International Driving Permit, border crossing permit, International Insurance Card / Green Card, rental agreement, and vehicle registration documents.
MotoGS Rental Croatia prepares the required border and insurance documents for approved international routes and hands them over at pickup. You must still make sure that your personal documents, licence, passport or ID card, and any visa or entry requirements are valid for every country on your planned route.
Before pickup, choose your motorcycle, check availability, confirm the rental period, complete the required rental payment, and make sure your credit card limit is sufficient for the deposit. You can compare our BMW GS rental fleet, check motorcycle search and availability, and review motorcycle rental prices before booking.
At pickup, MotoGS Rental Croatia checks your documents, confirms the payment and deposit, completes the motorcycle handover, explains the included equipment, and provides the prepared rental documents. If required documents are missing, invalid, unclear, or do not show the required motorcycle entitlement, the motorcycle may not be handed over.
For detailed information, please also see our FAQs about motorcycle licence validity, International Driving Permit, border crossing with a rental motorcycle, motorcycle insurance coverage, rental payment before pickup, and the rental terms and conditions.
For most online motorcycle rental bookings, payment is made directly through the booking portal using Stripe. Depending on your country, device, and card provider, Stripe may offer payment options such as credit card, debit card, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or other locally available online payment methods.
At MotoGS Rental Croatia, the normal booking process is handled online. When you reserve your motorcycle through our booking system, you can pay the required amount directly during the reservation process. You can usually choose whether to pay the 30% booking deposit first or pay the full rental price immediately, depending on the available booking options.
If you pay only the 30% booking deposit when reserving the motorcycle, the remaining 70% of the rental price must be paid no later than at the time of motorcycle handover. The exact payment status and any remaining balance are shown in your booking confirmation, invoice, or individual rental documents.
Bank transfer is not part of the standard online booking process. It may only be possible after prior agreement and separate invoicing. If a bank transfer has been agreed individually, the payment must be received according to the invoice or written payment instructions before the motorcycle is handed over.
The rental payment is separate from the security deposit. The EUR 2,000 security deposit is not paid through the online booking portal. It is reserved separately on a valid credit card at pickup and is required to secure possible damage, missing equipment, late return, traffic fines, tolls, or other obligations under the motorcycle rental agreement.
Cash payments, prepaid cards, or payment methods not supported by Stripe may not be accepted for standard online bookings. For the security deposit, a valid credit card with sufficient available limit is normally required. Please check your booking confirmation carefully and contact us before pickup if you have an individually agreed payment arrangement.
Before your rental starts, make sure your rental payment is completed according to your booking documents and that your credit card is ready for the security deposit at pickup. For related details, please also see our FAQs about rental payment before pickup, deposit and credit card, motorcycle insurance coverage, motorcycle rental excess, and our rental terms and conditions.
Before you pick up a rental motorcycle, you usually need to pay the rental price according to the booking terms. At MotoGS Rental Croatia, you can normally pay either a 30% booking deposit or the full rental price when you make your reservation.
The 30% booking deposit confirms your motorcycle reservation and secures the selected rental period. If you prefer, you can also pay 100% of the rental price at the time of booking.
If you paid only the 30% booking deposit, the remaining 70% of the rental price must be paid no later than at the time of motorcycle handover. The exact payment details are shown in your booking confirmation, invoice, or individual rental agreement.
The rental payment is separate from the security deposit. The rental payment covers the booked motorcycle rental period. The security deposit is not part of the rental price; it is a temporary reservation on your credit card at pickup and is used to secure possible damage, missing equipment, late return, traffic fines, tolls, or other obligations under the motorcycle rental agreement.
At MotoGS Rental Croatia, the standard security deposit is EUR 2,000 per motorcycle. This amount is reserved on a valid credit card when you collect the motorcycle and released after return, provided there are no open claims, damage, missing items, unpaid fees, traffic fines, tolls, or other contractual issues.
Before your rental starts, please make sure the rental price has been paid according to your booking documents and that your credit card has enough available limit for the EUR 2,000 security deposit. For related information, please also see our FAQs about motorcycle rental payment methods, rental deposit and credit card, motorcycle insurance coverage, motorcycle rental excess, and our rental terms and conditions.
In most motorcycle rentals, the renter is responsible for an excess if the rental motorcycle is damaged. At MotoGS Rental Croatia, the maximum excess for covered damage is EUR 2,000, but this amount can be insured separately through a special deposit insurance before the rental begins.
The excess is the maximum amount you may have to pay for damage to the rented motorcycle under the rental agreement. It is different from the deposit: the deposit is a security amount reserved on your credit card, while the excess defines your financial responsibility in case of covered damage.
At MotoGS Rental Croatia, all BMW GS rental motorcycles include standard insurance coverage. If the motorcycle is damaged during your rental, the maximum excess is EUR 2,000. This amount may be used to cover damage, depending on the inspection result, repair costs, insurance handling, and the terms of the motorcycle rental agreement.
You may also arrange a separate deposit insurance through our insurance partner, HanseMerkur insurance. This is a specific insurance product designed to protect the rental deposit or excess amount in the event of insured damage. Depending on the selected policy and its terms, it can reimburse or cover the EUR 2,000 excess. This insurance is not automatically included in the rental price and must be arranged separately before the rental starts.
Even if you arrange deposit insurance, the credit card deposit is still required at pickup. The deposit is reserved because it secures the motorcycle, the included equipment, possible damage, late return, traffic fines, missing items, and other obligations under the rental contract.
Important: deposit insurance does not cover every situation automatically. Off-road riding, racetrack use, riding under the influence of alcohol or drugs, gross negligence, unauthorized border crossings, or other serious breaches of the rental terms may lead to additional liability and may not be covered by insurance.
Before your trip, decide whether you want to keep the standard EUR 2,000 excess risk yourself or arrange optional deposit insurance. Please also check our FAQs about motorcycle insurance coverage, rental deposit and payment, border crossing with a rental motorcycle, what to do in case of damage or an accident, and our rental terms and conditions.
The minimum rental period tells you how long a motorcycle must be booked for a valid rental. At MotoGS Rental Croatia, the standard minimum rental period is 2 days, while one-day rentals are only possible by prior arrangement.
Motorcycle rental days are calculated in full 24-hour blocks, starting from the selected pickup time. This means that the return time matters: if the motorcycle is returned later than the originally selected return time, extra charges may apply according to the rental terms.
For example, if you pick up the motorcycle at 10:00 and return it two days later at 10:00, this is exactly 48 hours and counts as 2 rental days. If you pick up the motorcycle at 14:00 and return it five days later at 14:00, this is exactly 120 hours and counts as 5 rental days.
Pickup and return are generally possible during our business hours from 08:00 to 20:00, unless otherwise agreed. If the motorcycle is returned more than one hour late, MotoGS Rental Croatia may charge EUR 20 per started hour, including statutory VAT, as a handling and loss-of-use fee. Further damages may remain reserved according to the motorcycle rental agreement and the rental terms and conditions.
To avoid unnecessary extra charges, choose your return time carefully when booking and, where possible, select the same return time as your pickup time. If you need a different pickup or return time, please clarify this before your rental starts.
For related information, please also see our FAQs about motorcycle rental prices, motorcycle search and availability, rental payment before pickup, and our rental terms and conditions.
You normally pick up and return your rental motorcycle at the MotoGS Rental Croatia main handover location in Seget Donji near Trogir, close to Split Airport. This is the preferred starting point for riders who want to begin a motorcycle tour from the Split and Trogir area into Croatia, the Adriatic region, the Balkans, and Southern Europe.
For most riders, flying into Split Airport is the easiest and most practical option. Split Airport is located near Trogir, and the transfer to our main rental handover location in Seget Donji is usually straightforward by taxi, Uber, bus, or pre-arranged transport.
MotoGS Rental Croatia also has dedicated Meet & Greet / delivery locations: MotoGS Rental Croatia - Meet&Greet Split Airport (Delivery Location) and MotoGS Rental Croatia - Meet&Greet Caffe bar BMW (Delivery Location). These locations may be used by prior arrangement, depending on timing, availability, rental schedule, and operational capacity. The standard and preferred handover location remains MotoGS Rental Croatia - Seget Donji, Trogir.
If your international flight arrives in Zagreb, please plan an onward connection flight to Split. Our normal motorcycle pickup and return area is near Split Airport, Trogir, and Split, so starting the rental from the Split area is usually the most practical and cost-effective option. Long-distance motorcycle delivery to Zagreb is not part of the standard rental service.
At pickup, we complete the motorcycle handover, check the required documents, confirm the rental deposit and credit card reservation, inspect the motorcycle together, explain the luggage system and included motorcycle equipment, and adjust practical details such as seat height where possible.
If you arrive with a suitcase or larger travel bag, you can usually repack your riding essentials into the motorcycle luggage and leave your larger luggage safely with MotoGS during the rental period. This is especially useful if you start your ride directly after arriving at Split Airport.
At return, the motorcycle, luggage, equipment, fuel level, and any visible damage are checked together. You can also collect any stored luggage at this point. Please plan your return time realistically, especially if you have a same-day flight from Split Airport.
Before your rental starts, please share your arrival time, flight details, hotel location if relevant, and planned return time. This helps us prepare the handover properly and keep your motorcycle pickup and return as smooth as possible.
For planning your rental, please also check the BMW GS rental fleet, motorcycle search and availability, luggage storage during motorcycle rental, and rental terms and conditions.
Your motorcycle licence may be valid for renting a motorcycle in Europe, but it depends on where the licence was issued, whether it clearly shows the correct motorcycle category, and which countries you plan to ride through.
For motorcycle rental, the most important point is that your licence must clearly authorize you to ride the motorcycle category you want to rent. For MotoGS Rental Croatia, you need a valid Category A motorcycle licence or an equivalent full motorcycle licence recognized for your planned route.
If your motorcycle licence was issued in the EU or EEA, it is generally accepted for riding and renting motorcycles within the European Union, provided the correct motorcycle category is shown on the licence.
If your motorcycle licence was issued outside the EU or EEA, you should carry an International Driving Permit together with your original national motorcycle licence. The International Driving Permit is not a replacement for your licence; it is a translation document and must be presented together with the original licence.
This is especially important for riders from countries such as the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, South America, Asia, or other non-EU countries. Police checks, border crossings, insurance handling, and accident procedures can become difficult if your motorcycle entitlement is not clearly understood by local authorities.
At MotoGS Rental Croatia, the motorcycle is handed over in Croatia, but many customers ride through Croatia, the Adriatic region, the Balkans, Southern Europe, the Alps region, Italy, France, Switzerland, or other permitted countries. You must make sure your licence and travel documents are suitable for all countries on your planned route.
When you pick up the motorcycle, you must present your original motorcycle licence, your passport or national ID card, and—if applicable—your International Driving Permit. If your licence does not clearly show the required motorcycle category, the motorcycle may not be handed over.
Before travelling, check your licence category, issue country, expiry date, and whether you need an International Driving Permit for your route. For related information, please also see our FAQs about required rental documents, border crossing with a rental motorcycle, motorcycle insurance coverage, and our rental terms and conditions.
If the rental motorcycle is damaged, stolen, or involved in an accident, your first priority is safety. Secure yourself and your passenger, move out of danger if possible, inform MotoGS Rental Croatia immediately, and follow the required accident, theft, and insurance procedure.
In any emergency, stay calm and make the situation as safe as possible. If there are injuries, third parties, another vehicle, public property damage, unclear liability, or theft, call the police immediately and make sure an official report is created. A police report is especially important for theft, accidents involving other road users, insurance handling, and later clarification of responsibility.
Inform MotoGS Rental Croatia as soon as possible. If the motorcycle is no longer roadworthy, if the situation is urgent, or if you are unsure what to do next, call us directly. Do not continue riding a damaged motorcycle unless it is safe, legal, and MotoGS has confirmed the next step.
Document the situation carefully. Take clear photos of the motorcycle, all visible damage, the accident location, road conditions, other vehicles, number plates, insurance documents, and any relevant surroundings. Note the exact location, time, date, route, and circumstances. If the motorcycle is involved in an accident, complete the European Accident Report because it is required as supporting documentation for the insurance handling. You can download and print the form before your ride so you have it available in case of an accident.
Do not admit liability, do not pay third parties directly, and do not sign documents for another party without prior clarification. Your statement at the scene can affect the later insurance and legal handling, so keep the information factual and contact MotoGS before making any commitments.
For covered damage, the motorcycle rental excess is normally limited to EUR 2,000 per claim. This amount is secured by the rental deposit and credit card reservation taken at pickup. The final handling depends on the inspection result, repair costs, police or accident documentation, insurance terms, the motorcycle rental agreement, and the rental terms and conditions.
If the damage amount is higher than the excess, the remaining covered damage is generally handled through the motorcycle insurance coverage, provided the rental and insurance conditions were followed. Optional deposit insurance may help protect the EUR 2,000 excess in an insured damage case, but it must be arranged before the rental starts and is subject to the insurer’s policy terms.
Insurance protection and excess limitation may be affected or refused if the damage, accident, or theft is connected with a serious breach of the rental conditions. This includes, for example, off-road riding, prohibited use, riding under the influence of alcohol or drugs, unauthorized border crossing with a rental motorcycle, gross negligence, racing, or any use outside the agreed rental terms.
MotoGS Rental Croatia will assist you with the next practical steps, including roadside clarification, recovery if required, insurance communication, documentation, and return handling. The most important rule is simple: make the situation safe, involve the police when required, document everything, and contact MotoGS immediately.
Safety vest rules for motorcyclists depend on the country you are riding in. In some European countries, carrying or wearing a high-visibility vest is mandatory in certain situations, while in others it is only recommended. For motorcycle touring, the safest rule is simple: carry a reflective vest and use it whenever visibility or roadside safety matters.
When riding a rental motorcycle through Croatia, the Balkans, Southern Europe, or the area south of the Alps, regulations can change from one country to another. For a broader overview, please also see our guide to traffic regulations in Europe, especially if your route includes several countries.
Some countries require motorcyclists to wear a safety vest after a breakdown, accident, emergency stop, or when leaving the motorcycle on the roadside. Other countries do not make it mandatory for motorcycles, but still strongly recommend it.
At MotoGS Rental Croatia, safety vests are included with every rental motorcycle. We normally provide reflective vests for the rider and passenger, so you are better prepared for roadside stops, ferry loading, poor visibility, police checks, breakdowns, or cross-border motorcycle tours.
In Croatia, a reflective vest is part of the required safety equipment and should be used in the event of a breakdown or accident, especially outside built-up areas or on faster roads. In nearby touring countries, rules may differ: for example, Slovenia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Slovakia, France, North Macedonia, and other countries may require a vest in specific roadside or emergency situations, while countries such as Italy, Austria, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Greece, or Serbia may have different rules or exemptions for motorcycles.
Because these rules can change and may depend on the exact road type, country, and situation, we recommend keeping the safety vest easily accessible rather than packed deep inside your luggage. If you have to stop on the roadside, after a breakdown, after an accident, in poor visibility, or near traffic, wearing the vest is a simple way to make yourself more visible and reduce risk.
A safety vest does not replace other required riding equipment or safe riding behaviour. You must still wear a proper motorcycle helmet, use lights as required, follow local traffic laws, and comply with the safety and equipment rules in every country on your route.
Before starting your motorcycle tour, check the traffic regulations in Europe for the countries you plan to ride through and keep your safety vest within easy reach. For related information, please also see our FAQs about included motorcycle equipment, border crossing with a rental motorcycle, motorcycle insurance coverage, motorcycle route recommendations, and our rental terms and conditions.
Speed limits and toll rules for motorcycles vary across Europe. If you rent a motorcycle for a tour through Croatia, the Balkans, Southern Europe, or the area south of the Alps, you should always check the rules for every country on your route before you start riding.
In most European countries, speed limits depend on the road type, the vehicle category, weather conditions, local signs, and whether you are riding inside or outside built-up areas. Motorways, expressways, rural roads, mountain roads, tunnels, and urban areas can all have different limits.
Toll rules also differ from country to country. Some countries charge tolls by distance on motorways, some use motorway vignettes, some have electronic toll systems, and some routes include separate charges for tunnels, bridges, ferries, or mountain passes.
For a broader country-by-country overview, please see our guide to traffic regulations in Europe. This is especially useful if your motorcycle tour includes several countries, border crossings, ferry routes, or longer motorway sections.
At MotoGS Rental Croatia, many riders start from the Split or Trogir area and ride through Croatia, the Adriatic region, the Balkans, Italy, France, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, Hungary, Romania, or other permitted countries. You are responsible for following the speed limits, toll rules, parking rules, and traffic regulations in each country on your route.
In Croatia, motorcycles are generally subject to the same posted speed limits as other road vehicles, unless signs or local rules say otherwise. Croatian motorways are usually toll roads, and tolls are normally calculated by the route section used. Motorcycles are typically charged in a lower vehicle category than cars, but the exact toll depends on the road operator and route.
Before entering a toll road, tunnel, bridge, ferry, or restricted traffic zone, check whether a ticket, card payment, vignette, electronic toll device, or special fee is required. This is particularly important on cross-border tours, where the toll system can change immediately after entering another country.
Traffic fines, toll violations, unpaid road charges, or administrative fees are the renter’s responsibility and may be charged according to the motorcycle rental agreement and our rental terms and conditions.
Before your motorcycle tour starts, check the traffic regulations in Europe for all countries on your route and plan enough time for toll roads, borders, ferries, mountain roads, and local traffic. You can also view our BMW GS rental fleet, check motorcycle rental prices, and explore motorcycle route recommendations before planning your ride.
Alcohol limits for motorcycle riders vary across Europe. If you rent a motorcycle for a cross-border tour, you must follow the alcohol and drug regulations of every country on your route, not only the rules of the country where the rental starts.
Many European countries apply different blood alcohol limits depending on rider age, licence status, vehicle category, local traffic law, and the specific situation. Some countries apply lower or zero alcohol limits for young riders, new licence holders, professional drivers, or after certain traffic incidents.
In Croatia, the general blood alcohol limit is commonly stated as 0.5‰ for riders aged 25 and older. Riders under 25 are generally subject to a 0.0‰ alcohol limit. However, rules and enforcement can change, and your route may include countries with stricter limits. Before your motorcycle tour, check the current traffic regulations in Europe for every country you plan to ride through.
At MotoGS Rental Croatia, riding a rental motorcycle under the influence of alcohol, drugs, medication that impairs riding ability, or any other intoxicating substance is strictly prohibited. This rule applies regardless of whether a local legal limit appears to allow a small amount of alcohol. As a responsible motorcycle rental provider, we owe this clear standard not only to our customers, but also to passengers, other road users, emergency services, and anyone who could be affected by impaired riding.
Alcohol or drug involvement can affect the motorcycle insurance coverage, increase your personal liability, lead to police penalties, and create serious consequences under the motorcycle rental agreement and the rental terms and conditions.
If an accident, damage, theft, or roadside incident occurs, police may carry out alcohol or drug testing. Refusing an alcohol or drug test can also lead to serious penalties and may negatively affect insurance and liability handling.
If alcohol, drugs, medication impairment, or any other intoxicating substance is involved in an incident, the motorcycle rental excess, the rental deposit and credit card, police documentation, insurance records, and the full damage or accident procedure may become relevant.
The rule is clear: it is prohibited to ride or drive any vehicle under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or any substance that impairs your ability to ride. This applies to every vehicle, and of course also to a rental motorcycle from MotoGS Rental Croatia. Alcohol should only be consumed after the riding day is finished, the motorcycle is safely parked for the night, and you will not ride again. Before the next ride, you must be fully sober and fit to ride.
Yes, cross-border riding with a rental motorcycle is possible in Europe, but it is never automatic. It depends on the rental company’s approval, the motorcycle insurance coverage, the countries on your route, and the required border and vehicle documents.
At MotoGS Rental Croatia, you can ride our BMW GS rental motorcycles in all EU countries. You may also ride in Switzerland and in all Balkan countries except Kosovo, provided the route is approved and the required documents are carried with you.
Kosovo is not covered by our motorcycle insurance and is therefore not allowed. The Asian part of Turkey is also not allowed. If your route includes international travel, please make sure every country on your route is permitted under the rental and insurance conditions before you start riding.
For approved cross-border motorcycle tours, you must carry the required documents. These normally include your passport or national ID card, valid motorcycle licence, rental agreement, vehicle registration documents, border crossing permit, and International Insurance Card / Green Card. If your motorcycle licence was issued outside the EU or EEA, an International Driving Permit may also be required or strongly recommended.
MotoGS Rental Croatia prepares the required border and insurance documents for approved international routes and hands them over at pickup. You are still responsible for checking your personal travel documents, visa or entry requirements, licence validity, and the rules of every country you plan to ride through.
Border rules, police checks, insurance requirements, toll systems, safety equipment rules, and traffic regulations can differ from country to country. This is especially important on motorcycle tours through Croatia, the Adriatic region, the Balkans, Southern Europe, the Alps region, Italy, Austria, Slovenia, Hungary, Romania, France, Switzerland, or other permitted countries.
Unauthorized border crossings can affect the motorcycle insurance coverage, increase your liability, create problems with police or border authorities, and lead to consequences under the motorcycle rental agreement and the rental terms and conditions.
If your planned route includes ferries, non-EU borders, Balkan countries, Switzerland, or longer international sections, tell us before pickup. This allows us to check whether the route is permitted and prepare the correct documents for your ride.
For planning your route, please also check our FAQs about required rental documents, motorcycle licence validity, ferry travel with a rental motorcycle, motorcycle insurance coverage, and traffic regulations in Europe. Yes, you can usually take a rental motorcycle on a ferry, as long as the route is permitted under the rental agreement and any required border-crossing documents are carried with you. At MotoGS Rental Croatia, ferry travel is allowed, but international ferry routes should be discussed before your trip.
Ferries are part of many motorcycle routes in Croatia, the Adriatic region, and the Balkans. Domestic ferries can connect the Croatian mainland with islands, while international ferries may connect Croatia, Albania, Montenegro, Italy, or other countries depending on the route and season.
If your ferry route stays within Croatia, it is normally treated like any other approved road route. You should still follow the ferry company’s loading instructions, secure the motorcycle properly on board, and make sure your luggage and personal items are safely packed.
For ferry crossings, it is always useful to have at least two tie-down straps available to secure the motorcycle on board. In many cases, securing the vehicle is handled by the ferry company, but on busy crossings there may not always be enough straps available for every motorcycle. If you let us know before pickup that a ferry is part of your planned route, we can provide at least two tie-down straps for your trip.
If your ferry route crosses an international border, it is treated as international travel. In that case, you must carry the required documents, such as your passport or national ID card, valid motorcycle licence, border crossing permit, International Insurance Card / Green Card, rental agreement, and vehicle registration documents.
Please let us know before pickup if your route includes an international ferry connection. This allows us to check whether the destination country is permitted under the rental and insurance conditions and to prepare the required documents for your trip.
Ferry tickets are usually booked directly with the ferry company or through online ferry booking platforms. Availability, departure times, cabins, and vehicle rules depend on the route, season, and ferry operator, so it is worth checking the details before you travel.
Before booking a ferry, make sure the route is allowed for your rental motorcycle and that you have all required travel documents. It depends on how flexible you want your motorcycle tour to be. If you ride solo or with one passenger, you may not need to book every night in advance. If you ride with several motorcycles, passengers, or during the main touring season, booking accommodation ahead becomes much more important.
Accommodation planning affects more than where you sleep. It also influences your daily riding distance, arrival time, motorcycle parking, luggage handling, ferry planning, border-crossing timing, and how relaxed the next riding day will be.
Solo riders or one motorcycle with a passenger usually have more flexibility, especially outside the main riding season. If you are comfortable deciding your route day by day, you may book only the first night, the last night, or key overnight stops and leave the rest open.
Once several riders are touring together, accommodation becomes more difficult. Two, three, four, or more motorcycles may require several rooms, single rooms, twin rooms, double rooms, space for riding gear, and safe motorcycle parking. Most riders also want to stay in the same hotel or guesthouse, which makes last-minute booking harder.
If you start your rental motorcycle tour from the Split or Trogir area, many routes lead through Croatia, the Adriatic region, the Balkans, Southern Europe, or the area south of the Alps. In these regions, accommodation availability and prices can change significantly depending on season, location, local events, ferry connections, national parks, islands, and border-crossing plans.
For most rental motorcycle tours, normal hotels, guesthouses, or apartments are the most practical choice. When booking accommodation, look for safe motorcycle parking, easy luggage access, a realistic arrival time, and a location that fits your planned daily riding distance.
Camping can be an option for some riders, but it should be planned carefully and only where it is legally permitted. Wild camping is not a reliable or recommended planning basis for a rental motorcycle tour. If you want to camp, use official campsites or accommodation providers that clearly allow it.
At MotoGS Rental Croatia, we recommend planning at least the critical overnight stops before the tour, especially for group rides, high-season riding, island routes, ferry connections, mountain areas, or cross-border motorcycle tours. We may also be able to help with practical route tips, regional advice, and recommendations based on our experience with motorcycle tours through Croatia, the Balkans, the Adriatic region, and Southern Europe.
Before you start your motorcycle tour, check your route idea, daily riding distances, parking options, room availability, and how much flexibility you really want. When you rent a motorcycle, safe parking depends on the country, city, accommodation, road situation, and local parking rules. The best approach is to use official motorcycle parking where available, choose visible and well-lit places, follow local signs, and secure the motorcycle properly whenever you leave it unattended.
Parking rules can vary widely across Europe. A place that is accepted for motorcycles in one town may be restricted in another. This is especially important on motorcycle tours through Croatia, the Adriatic region, the Balkans, Italy, the Alps, Southern Europe, islands, ferry ports, old towns, national parks, and busy tourist areas.
Whenever possible, park in marked motorcycle spaces, hotel parking areas, secure garages, supervised parking lots, or places recommended by your accommodation. At hotels, guesthouses, and apartments, ask in advance whether safe motorcycle parking is available, especially if you are travelling with several riders or staying in a city centre, harbour area, island town, or mountain village.
Do not block pavements, pedestrian zones, private entrances, emergency access, hotel driveways, ferry lanes, loading areas, or spaces reserved for residents, taxis, buses, or disabled parking. Even if local riders appear to park informally, this does not always mean it is legal, tolerated, or safe for a rental motorcycle.
Parking fees, parking permits, toll parking zones, local restrictions, fines, towing costs, and administrative fees are the renter’s responsibility. If a parking fine, unpaid parking fee, towing charge, or traffic-related administrative cost is issued during the rental period, it may be handled according to the motorcycle rental agreement and the rental terms and conditions.
For theft prevention, always lock the motorcycle and use the additional security lock with alarm function provided with the rental motorcycle. Do not leave helmets, jackets, gloves, documents, electronics, wallets, passports, cameras, navigation devices, or other valuables unsecured on the motorcycle or inside easily accessible luggage.
At MotoGS Rental Croatia, every BMW GS rental motorcycle includes practical touring equipment such as lockable side cases, a top case, and an additional alarm lock. This helps make parking safer during multi-day rides, but it does not replace careful parking decisions and basic theft prevention.
The motorcycle has theft-related insurance coverage, but insurance handling always depends on the situation, documentation, police report where required, the motorcycle insurance coverage, the rental deposit and credit card, the motorcycle rental excess, and the rental and insurance conditions. Negligent behaviour, leaving the motorcycle unsecured, ignoring local rules, or parking in prohibited or unsafe places may affect liability and insurance handling.
If the motorcycle is stolen, damaged while parked, towed, or involved in a parking-related incident, contact MotoGS Rental Croatia immediately. In case of theft, third-party damage, unclear liability, official involvement, or any accident-related parking damage, contact the police and make sure the incident is properly documented. If the motorcycle is involved in an accident or damage with another party, complete the European Accident Report, because it is required as supporting documentation for the insurance handling. Please also follow the damage or accident procedure.
Before planning your route, check the traffic regulations in Europe for the countries you want to ride through, especially if your tour includes border crossings, ferry ports, islands, city centres, mountain passes, or toll parking zones. For route planning, please also see our motorcycle route recommendations and the included motorcycle equipment.
